WE'VE read, with great interest, recent letters concerning the possibility of West Devon Borough Council moving to an Executive-led system. There have also been views expressed about the council merging with South Hams District Council.

We can place on record that there are no plans for the two councils to merge. Members of both councils have stated categorically there will be no political merger, so residents of West Devon will still be able to attend committee meetings in Tavistock.

As far as moving to an alternative to our committee system — Executive or Cabinet ? — this has certainly been discussed informally and there are mixed views amongst present members.

But as has already been stated a change to a system where individuals have executive powers can only be brought in in 2015.

In our view, as senior members of a consensus based council, we feel it is right that time should be taken to consider any potential change. If the issue is tabled after the elections in May there must be a period of time which will allow for the fullest consideration not only with 'returning members' and those newly elected, but by the public too.

So we do not see West Devon moving to an Executive/Cabinet for some time, if at all.
