STICKLEPATH Sports and Social club held its popular annual pram race last weekend.
Now in its 31st year, the event welcomed more than 20 teams from around the area and at least one visiting team which had travelled down from Beaconsfield and raced to celebrate a 60th birthday.
The teams all made an amazing effort with their prams and costumes; taking inspiration from television, film, fairy stories and some being just plain crazy!
The race began at noon from Reddaway's yard, South Zeal, where teams and spectators had been gathering for nearly two hours. A bar was laid on by St Austell Brewery and The Devonshire Inn. Delicious bacon rolls freshly cooked by some of the local ladies were also available.
Once the race was under way, the field quickly spread out and within 15 minutes the first team, The Boy Racers, were already at The Seven Stars, having checked in at The Oxenham Arms first. The Boy Racers went on to be the overall winners this year completing the course in a little over 25 minutes.
For the next few hours teams trickled to the finish for the final drink and checkpoint sign off, before relaxing between the Devonshire Inn and The Taw River where the prize giving ceremony was hosted.
Spokesman for the race Paul Warne said: 'Although it is too early to give a final figure, early indications are that overall the event this year raised over £800 which, when the final amount is collected, will be donated to one or more local charities or good causes.
'So a huge thank you to all teams who took part again this year, we really do appreciate your efforts and hope you enjoyed the day.
'A big thank you to all the pubs and businesses that have been involved, we really are grateful for your continued support and to all of those who have given your time in any way at all, thank you.'
The Sticklepath Sports and Social club will be holding some more, smaller events over the coming months, including a Christmas car treasure hunt in early December and a spring dance early next year, details to follow.
