EXPLORER Scouts from Mid Devon gathered with other scouts from all over Devon to learn how to become young leaders.

The boys and girls, aged 14 to 18, are volunteers who assist more experienced leaders at Beaver and Cub Scout sessions.

The weekend, at the Wembworth Centre, Chulmleigh, was packed with training modules, from the ice breaking games through to sessions on running adventurous outdoor activities, woodcraft and lighting fires.

Josh Salter, 16, from Okehampton, said: 'The weekend was a lot of fun and has opened up opportunities for young people like myself.'

Scout leader Andy Ellis said: 'With teenagers in some areas getting a bad press it is great to see young people from all over Devon who have desires to help other young people.

'The weekend was all about giving these youngsters the tools and confidence to become our leaders of the future.'
