BLACK ice sparked at least a dozen accidents on the A30 in the Okehampton area yesterday (Wednesday).
Police said officers at the scene reported it was 'too slippery to even stand up' in some places.
'Accidents have littered the road this morning,' said a spokesman.
Sgt Mark Hoar from Okehampton Police Station said: 'We had cars down banks, across barriers, in trees, in ditches — we had at least a dozen incidents between Whiddon Down and Lewdown.
'It was extremely busy. We were probably pushed about as hard as we could go.'
Sgt Hoar said the roads in the area were 'incredibly icy' but that luckily, all the incidents involved single vehicles — there were no multiple car accidents.
'Certainly, at the A30 off-slip at Sourton, I had to get them to grit it three times before the ice melted,' said Sgt Hoar.
'The good news was that nobody was injured. Generally speaking people weren't travelling at high speed, the vehicles only went a short way off the road and we managed to keep the road open.
'We did close one lane at Meldon while we recovered a vehicle but only on the eastbound carriageway — westbound remained open at all times.'
Sgt Hoar added that the A30 slip road at Okehampton Services was also closed for a short while to recover a vehicle. Firecrews assisted the police in dealing with incidents.
