RESIDENTS, family and friends gathered in South Tawton square last Saturday to celebrate a special birthday and recognise the dedication to the village and parish of David Youle, writes Ursula Radford.
The historic Church House had languished for many years in a state of dilapidation until ten years ago when a project was launched to restore the building with the help of National Lottery funding.
This initiative was spearheaded by David and it was largely thanks to his vision and energy that the proposed restoration became a reality.
Subsequently, he has worked tirelessly in organising and promoting a varied programme of fundraising events in aid of Church House, baked scones for cream teas, managed finances, ensured the maintenance of the building and even cleaned the loos.
Above the square stands St Andrew's Church and it is to this, and the tiny St Mary's Church in South Zeal that David, a gentle man and gentleman, has also directed his supportive energies over the years.
The local school and many other organisations, charities and groups could be listed as those among many he has helped in the past.
To mark his 80th birthday and to thank him for all he has done, a surprise party in Church House was arranged.
All local residents were invited to thank him personally for all he has done for the community and to be there when he was presented with a framed illuminated document produced by heraldic artist, Neil Bromley, a specially commissioned Church House cake baked by local resident Susan Freeman and a giant key, made by local blacksmith Dave Denford, representing the freedom of the village of South Tawton.
