I WRITE from first-hand experience, when I tell you about the wonderful work that was carried out at Redvers, before its recent suspension, in the hope that the decision will be reversed.

My husband died two years ago. He suffered from dementia and I was a carer for him. I was determined to look after my husband at home, but as anyone knows who has nursed anyone with dementia, this is not always possible.

With the facilities of Redvers, including assessment and respite, I was granted this wish. My husband was well looked after and I was given time to re-charge my batteries, each week, for his return.

I have no doubt that without the wonderful service of the staff and facilities of Redvers, I indeed might have required other services from the NHS, in order to help me cope with the very demanding tasks as a carer.

I urge everyone who reads this letter to contact their MP and Dr Kevin Snee, Chief Executive of the Primary Care Trust, and demand that the unit be kept open, for the community, staff, carers and last but not least for our loved ones who can't speak for themselves.
