A FEW months ago the Sunday Times Rich List reported the combined fortune of Britain's richest 1,000 people had hit a new high of £519bn – equivalent to a third of the country's economic output.   This represents a 15.4% increase on the previous year and double the figure of five years ago.   To put it another way, each of these 1,000 lucky individuals is 'earning' a £1.42 million lottery jackpot win every single day of the year — and probably more next year, and the next.   Now the government is telling midwives and nurses who in their entire careers in the NHS will not earn the equivalent of one day's pay of the top 1,000 that they are not worth a 1% pay increase. Well done to all the NHS staff who took part in last week's strike.   I do not expect the government to listen to you but I hope the electorate will.
