WEST Devon became ‘Wet Devon’ over the weekend as severe downpours raised rivers to worryingly high levels.

The worst of the weather was on Saturday, with a storm waking up people in Tavistock and the surrounding area at 6am on Saturday with two tremendous claps of thunder before a day of heavy rain.

While rivers and streams rose to worrying levels, households generally escaped flood damage — including properties on the banks of the West Okement in Okehampton and the Colly Brook in Peter Tavy.

As rainwater rushed off the moor and into Peter Tavy, a number of quick-thinking residents cleared blocked drains to help avoid any damage to houses in the village.

Their efforts proved to be worthwhile as water poured down a number of driveways in the heart of the village but thankfully no houses were damaged.
