NORTH TAWTON’S David Nicks is set to star in an episode of Amazing Spaces: Shed of the Year on Channel 4 with his unique whisky shed.

David’s transformed outhouse at the bottom of his garden, which he calls Whisky HQ, has been shortlisted as a finalist in the programme’s search for the UK’s most amazing shed.

The show’s host, George Clarke, is a renowned British architect turned television presenter whose programme entertains and educates viewers by showing them how to turn small spaces into big dreams.

The competition has eight categories and the winners of each will battle it out to be crowned Shed of the Year 2017.

Last week, David’s whisky hub was announced as one of four finalists in the competition’s pub and entertainment category.

‘A couple of years ago I had the idea to transform the outside building into a place I could hide,’ joked David.

‘It’s now a Whisky HQ where me and my friends, who are also whisky-enthusiasts, meet up once a month to taste whisky and talk nonsense.

‘It’s a small building, about 8ft by 10ft but it’s snug and something a bit different.

‘The decor consists of lots of whisky bottles, many of which had to be filled with cold tea as we’d already drank the whisky.’

David explained that he had transformed the shed, which used to be an outdoor toilet in the 60s, using any materials he could get his hands on.

The shed features posters, bottles, picture frames, a dart board, a Wellington Bomber landing light as well as a barrel top from an Irish bar.

Beginning the transformation project in September 2015, David aimed to complete it by December so that his family could eat Christmas dinner in the new shed.

He said: ‘I finished the building just in time for Christmas, although we didn’t have the woodburner at that point, so we were eating Christmas dinner in our coats and wooly hats!’

When asked what made his shed unique, David explained it was not only a great place for his whisky tasting group to hold their gatherings, but also a fantastic place to relax and escape from stress.

‘My wife, son and I often spend time in there, especially on a Sunday. With no Wi Fi or phone signal it’s such a great way to escape from the stress and pressures of the modern world.’

David’s shed will appear on the show later this year.
