Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Okehampton Argyle 3
Sidmouth Town 1
ARGYL E showed tremendous spirit to come back and win this game last Saturday after Sidmouth had been the better team for the opening half hour.
Sidmouth settled far more quickly and took the lead after only three minutes when a poor headed back pass from Chris Wills fell straight at the feet of visiting striker Jake Boyland, who lobbed the ball over Harry Geering in the home goal to give the keeper no chance.
Argyle took time to recover and for the first 30 minutes, Okehampton were continually pushed back, but the nearest Sidmouth came to increasing their lead was when a fine 20 yard shot rattled the Oke crossbar and rebounded into play. As the half wore on, Argyle began to put some decent moves together and two minutes before the interval, a fine move down the right saw Steve Kinsey pull the ball back for Dale Chadwick to fire home a ferocious drive from the edge of the penalty area.
Argyle were a different team after the break and really took the game to Sidmouth. On 59 minutes, substitute Toby Gostling powered into the visitors' half with the ball and found Steve Kinsey on the edge of the box. His clever reverse pass completely wrong-footed the visitors' defence and this allowed John Coakley to run on unchallenged to slot the ball past Robbie Powell in the Sidmouth goal.
Four minutes later, a tremendous run by Ed Squire from midfield saw him beat three players and unleash a shot which Powell could only parry across the face of his goal. Ollie Crimmins was on hand to make no mistake and fire the ball into the empty net.
To Sidmouth's credit they fought back and made some good opportunities and were unlucky to hit the cross bar once again and to find Geering in top form. One of his point blank saves was really outstanding.
Argyle continued to make chances also and should have increased their lead when Coakley's speed took him past the visitors' defence only for him to fire wide with just Powell to beat.
This was a real workmanlike performance from Argyle and although there was little to choose between the teams, Okehampton wanted the game more. Ed Squire and Harry Geering put in outstanding performances and John Coakley, promoted from the second XI, impressed with his non-stop running.
Argyle 200 club draw: February 9, ticket number 62, Sandra Ausden, £25; Feb 16, no 97, Charlie Bond £25; Feb 23, no 120, Liz Beer, £25.
