CHAGFORD'S beautiful bowling green was the scene of a feast of bowls on Saturday when teams from Okehampton, North Tawton, Moreton-hampstead, Bovey Tracey and Crediton played against the Chagford club in a round robin match to celebrate its 90th anniversary.
The day was perfect with unbroken sunshine and a light breeze so the views towards Castle Drogo and Kestor were crystal clear.
Experienced members were joined by newly joined ones in a light-hearted afternoon. It is believed to be the first time five rinks have been played at Chagford.
The matches were followed by a 'Spider' with three prizes spread between the home team, Okehampton and Moretonhampstead.
The afternoon was completed by the presentation of a memento to all players and a splendid 'Bowler's tea' much appreciated by all.
The anniversary marked 90 known years at the old Moor Park Hotel and the current site in Mill Street. There seems little doubt though that bowls has been played in Chagford for much longer with mentions of greens at St John's and Rushford.
The Chagford Bowling Club president, Ray Hurd, spoke of the longevity of the game and looked forward to a successful ongoing club continuing to provide entertainment and gentle exercise in the exceptionally lovely setting that the club is fortunate to have.
He also hoped that any men and women interested would know they would be welcome at any time.
The year had already been notable for the club by the award this month of a county badge to one of its members, Brian Baker.
The club will be having an open evening on June 14 from 4pm. New members are always welcome, so just turn up with flat soled shoes at any time before 8.30pm to try this social sport.
