2nd XI B West

Yelverton 2nds v Ivybridge 2nds

ON a hot and sunny afternoon, captain Gerry Keen lost the toss and Yelverton were asked to field first.

On a flat pitch offering little to the bowlers, the Ivybridge openers Northmore and Johnson got off to a brisk start and put in 45 in seven overs before Northmore was caught down the legside for 27 off the bowling of Dom Rushton (1-53).

Kidd joined Johnson and after a couple of half chances the pair steadily started to build their partnership.

The pair ended up batting together for 31 overs, putting on 168 for the second wicket as the Yelverton bowlers toiled in the sun. Chris Pearson (1-36) broke the partnership with the score on 213 having Johnson (55) caught by Frazer Reed at mid-wicket.

Kidd followed 12 runs later, trapped LBW by Jamie Cooper (2-31) for 85. Steve Colmer picked up the wicket of Ivybridge captain Jerry Clough second ball.

A few lower order blows in the remaining overs to Ivybridge to 269-6 when their overs ran out. Extras (64) were the second highest score and contributed to the imposing total.

Yelverton’s opening pair of Chris Cottrell and Jamie Cooper were tied down by some accurate bowling and their opening 51 run partnership came up in the 16th over.

Jamie Cooper was the first to go, run out going for a quick single. Cottrell fell LBW 16 runs later for 25. Matt Smith scored a bright and breezy 25 before playing in with the score on 96.

Steve Colmer was joined by Henry Webster & the pair punished anything wayward in a quick fire partnership of 70 in 9 overs. One withering drive by Webster almost took out his partner backing up at the non-strikers end.

Colmer eventually fell for a well played 54 off 52 balls, caught in the deep. Webster (40) continued to pepper the boundary with some lusty blows and with the help of Eddie Foskett took the score up to an acceptable 205-6 when the overs ran out.

Despite the loss by 64 runs (ironically the same total of extras conceded) this was an acceptable reply in these circumstances.

Next weekend Yelverton 2nds make the short trip to play Plymouth 3rds.
