Devon Seconds B West
TAVISTOCK 2nd XI entertained Ashburton, hoping to consolidate their position at number two in the table.
Tavistock batted first. Phil Bees gave them a solid start, and when he was out at 97-3, Matt Puttock and John McGahey took up the reins.
Puttock was in fine form, hammering out a magnificent hundred and adding 99 for the fifth wicket with McGahey who made 40.
Once out, McGahey, was replaced by Mark Hopkins who applied the brutal touch with a rapid 50, enabling Tavistock to close on 293-6. Ashburton were never in the chase, but batted steadily all the way for 202-3.
All the bowlers contributed to keeping a lid on the scoring, with Mark Hopkins and Andy Gauler taking a wicket each, giving Tavistock a win by 91 runs.
Plymouth 3rd XI v Tavistock 2nd XI
Tavistock went into the last game of the season knowing a win would ensure second position in the league.
Plymouth batted first and at 73-2 were in a good position. Gradually Tavistock began to assert themselves, and wickets began to fall steadily until Plymouth were eventually bowled out for 131.
Mark Hopkins with 4-16 in his nine overs was exemplary, backed up by Mark Lewis with 2-25 and Matt Puttock 3-28, while captain Andy Gauler’s nine overs only went for 15 runs.
Tavistock began badly, three quick wickets went down before Puttock took charge again, making a superb 68 not out and, with Marc Webber 31 not out giving support, the total was rapidly achieved in just over 27 overs.
A good season for the second XI mean they finished second in the table, consolidating their position in the new all-through leagues system that will be applied next year.
