Thorverton v Tavistock

TAVISTOCK lost back to back games for the first time this season when they were again on the wrong side of a dramatic final over.

They had been third heading into the away game against Thorverton, who were struggling.

The visitors lost the toss and were sent into bat by the home side. Tavistock got off to a poor start losing Billy Barriball, Ian Gray and Dave Manning early. With their team 14-3 Aaron Churchill and James White dug in but their resistance didn’t last long as Churchill was removed for 17 and the score was just 35-4.

Charlie Barriball came in at number six and decided to take the game back to the home side who were having it all their own way. He took on the home team’s spinners in the middle overs while White showed maturity beyond his years to make sure his side could get up to a defendable total.

Charlie reached 50 in rapid time and had pushed his side past 100. He was eventually out LBW to Nick Barton for 66. Barton then got his second two balls later when captain, Shaun Daymond flicked the ball well off his legs but mid -wicket took a superb one handed catch to his right-hand side.

Dylan Aucamp came to the crease and looked to continue with the attacking intent Charlie had shown whilst White held up his end, he reached 20 before chipping the ball up in the air off the bowling of Jake Crouch.

Tavistock were 151-8 with ten overs remaining and needed something special if they were going to reach 200. Sean Cleave came in at number 10 and smashed the ball to all parts.

Cleave and White put on 69 in the last ten overs, with Cleave making 49 before falling LBW to Ben Coe in the last over. His innings got his side up to 221-9 from their 45 overs with White unbeaten on 48 at the end.

Tavistock needed early wickets if they wanted to get into this game but they were unable to do so.

Thorverton’s opening pair Paul Fielder and George Greed were solid at the top and made Tavistock pay for some dropped catches. The pair put on 59 for the opening partnership with James McGahey getting the much-needed breakthrough in his final over, clean bowling Greed for 15.

Wickets were still hard to come by for the away side but they were able to keep the scoring to a minimum and with the run rate slowly increasing they were building pressure for the back end of the game.

Alex Hills joined Fielder at the crease and the pair put on another 50-partnership taking their team past 100. Fielder went past his 50 but was eventually caught and bowled by Tavistock skipper, Shaun Daymond for 60.

James Grady came in at number four and put on yet another 50 partnership with Hills. Bone eventually removed Hills for 38 but the home side were strong favourites at 175-3.

Dylan Aucamp and Charlie Barriball came on to bowl the final ten overs and the pair were able to keep the scoring to a minimum but Grady was proving the pivotal wicket.

With two overs left Thorverton needed ten runs to win the game. Shaun Daymond bowled the over and a dropped catch at deep mid-wicket in the penultimate over meant a dot ball and wicket turned into two runs. Dylan Aucamp had four runs to defend in his final over but after two dot balls, Grady picked up a back of a length ball and hit it for six over square leg to win his side the game.

He finished 56 not out in a superb innings that got his side their third win of the season.
