Teignmouth 4

Okehampton Argyle 0

Okehampton looked anything but a basement side in the first half against third placed Teignmouth and were unlucky not to go in with a half-time lead.

Argyle were, again, left short of numbers and manager Jamie Ware had to run the line leaving secretary Charlie Bond in the dugout. Again the side had to play without any substitutes with Harry Geering, Alex Wren and James Williams away and Ross Voaden unavailable.

However, Argyle put in a tremendous hard working display throughout the 90 minutes and in the first half went toe to toe with the high flying home side. Argyle included two 17 year old defenders Elliot Eavis and Harry McGrath, who travelled from Bournemouth to help the club out, and both had really good games in a defence that gave nothing away in the first half. After an even first period, Argyle came closest to scoring five minutes before the interval when man of the match Dale Chadwick let fly with a tremendous 35 yard shot that struck the underside of the home crossbar and came down on the line before somehow being scrambled away by Teignmouth.

Argyle continued to work hard in the second half but with Teignmouth having a full five substitutes to choose from and therefore able to refresh tired legs, Okehampton’s task was obviously more difficult.

Home midfielder Matt Eaves eventually broke the deadlock and then added a second to give Teignmouth some breathing space, but Argyle refused to lie down and Harry McGrath saw a fierce shot from the edge of the box cannon back off the crossbar and fall to Roger Bonaparte, who blazed over the bar when well placed. Near the end, Ryan Bush added a third for the home side when the Argyle defenders were slow to organise themselves for a free kick. However Argyle came back again and Ed Bradshaw had an effort well saved by home keeper Adam Broome.

To rub salt into the wounds, Eaves completed his hat-trick in the last minute with a shot that took two deflections on its way into the net to give the home side a final scoreline that flattered them.

Dale Chadwick had an outstanding game for Argyle marshalling the defence and Steve Kinsey who had been suffering all week with flu put in a great performance in midfield, but all 11 players played their hearts out and gave their all.

With regular keeper Geering away, Josh Townsend donned the gloves and had a good game, having no chance with any of the goals.
