OKEHAMPTON Golf Club has been busy with a ladies’ Texas scramble, a mixed foursomes competition, ‘Four Ball Better Ball Open’ and visit to Teign Valley Golf Club for the Dartmoor Pony Trophy.

The Texas scramble on August 26 always proves to be a popular event with over 20 clubs being represented. In a Texas scramble, each player on a team hits a tee shot. The best ball as determined by the captain is selected for the second shot. Each member of the team hits their shot from that spot. The process continues until the hole is played out.

The overall winners with 61.2 nett were L Moore, K Shiells and C Lewis from Farrington and the Isle of Wight. Second overall representing Ashbury and Treloy Golf Clubs were L Rolfe, M Huggins and C Boothroyd with nett 62.8. The best visitor prize went to P Weston, P Hodge and L Rees from Looe and the best combination prize was won by M Collett, S Stanbury and K Farrant from Okehampton and Weston Super Mare.

The drawn mixed foursomes competition on August 31 was held for the Dora Milner Trophy. It was a close run final with the top three pairs all achieving nett 69. After countback the Dora Milner Trophy was awarded to Cherry James and Adrian Tilley. Second place went to Janice Thwaites and David Williams and in third were Sue Williams and Nick Atkinson.

The club was blessed with late summer sunshine on September 5 for the ‘Four Ball Better Ball Open’ and with the course in fantastic condition it enabled a large field to enjoy a great day’s golf. The overall winners with 44 points were Paul Skidmore and Richard Reid of Okehampton and second overall were Steve Browne and G Browne from Okehampton and Crediton with a score of 43 points.

Best Okehampton prize went to Alan Searle and Mark Wonnacott with 42 points after countback and the best combination prize was won by J Stacey and R Woodgate of Okehampton and Holsworthy with a score of 39 points.

The best visitor prize went to A Cichowski & A Sim of Henbury with 37 points and the second prize was won by R Pipe and N Jenkins of Newquay with 36 points.

On Wednesday the ladies entered an individual medal competition for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Pin. The winner of the bronze division and the pin was Janice Thwaites with nett 68. In second was Francis Harbron with nett 70 and third with nett 71 was Anne Brokenbrow. The silver division was won by Sue Stanbury with nett 69. Penny Deakin was second with nett 73 and third was Pam Jarman with nett 76.

On September 6, six mixed pairs from Okehampton, Tavistock, Wrangaton and Yelverton set off for Teign Valley Golf Club to enter into a greensomes competition in order to try and regain the much coveted Dartmoor Pony Trophy. This was the 20th anniversary year of this match and Okehampton came through as the overall winners.
