’WE are getting closer!’ declared Tavistock’s lady captain Julie Harding after the ladies were defeated, once again, by the men in their annual battle for the Callard Cup.
‘The score of two and a half to four and a half does not reflect how close some matches were, so the ladies are getting closer to a win! Nevertheless it was, as usual, an enjoyable occasion.’
Tavistock men had a great victory at Yelverton when they won the Brian Bounsall Trophy. The format is a four ball better ball, foursomes and singles and the Tavistock team of Alan Gawman, George Gawman, Graham Ruth, Chris Gawman, Jim Whitbread, Dave Turnbull, Will Stenhouse, Nick Meir and Dan Harris won by a handsome margin of 14.5 points.
In the men’s monthly Stableford Ross Davies scored 42pts on count back from Graham Ruth to top division one. Third was Graham Caines 37 pts on count back from Mike Apps.
First in division two with 37 pts was Michael Thrasher, second Tony Cooper with 35pts on count back from Keith Klein, Simon Bridgewater, Will Caulfield and Harry Hopcroft. In division three Tim Baskerville scored 37pts, second Keith Bridle 35pts on count back from William Ingram.
The ladies played for the Alice Rose Bowl in conjunction with their Stableford. In division one first was Wendy George 36pts, second Fran Horton 35pts on count back from Maggie Hillman.
Marion Stenhouse was first in division two with 38pts and won the bowl on countback from Sue Coles. Third in the division was Carolyn Crawford with 32pts.
With 31pts Barbara Porter was first in division three on countback from Pat Pope; third was Helen Phipps with 30pts.
The Goddard Smith Trophy was played in conjunction with the ladies’ monthly medal and was won by Donna Gage, first in division one, with a great score of net 65 to win the trophy. Second in the division was Bev Ruth net 74 on countback from Fran Horton and Lynn Swift.
With a net 74 Peggy Burge was first in division two; second Jean Thomas net 76 and third was Chris Kelly with net 79 on count back from Sue Coles.
The juniors played for the Simon Gilder Trophy which was won this year by Callum Watkin with a superb net 63, runner up was Emma Greening net 70 and, in third place was George Bumford net 71.
