Carlsberg South West Peninsula League one East
Okehampton Argyle 1
Teignmouth 3
THIS was a disappointing result for Argyle to end their season with, but Teignmouth are a good side who have now gone on a run of 10 wins, two draws and no defeats since January 7.
The match was two minutes old when Teignmouth broke through on the right and striker Liam McAuley deceived Argyle keeper Harry Geering with a cross shot from the edge of the box that flew inside the far post.
Within two minutes, Okehampton were level when Will Hawking burst into the visitors box before lobbing the Teignmouth keeper. Both teams were fully committed to attack and the game swung from end to end.
Luke Alden constantly tormented the visitors' defence with runs down the left and should have scored on the half hour after beating three players before failing to deliver the killer punch. The Teignmouth number eight continually turned the Argyle defence inside out. Ten minutes before the interval, Teignmouth regained the lead when the Argyle defence failed to cut out a ball down the middle and McAuley notched his second with a powerful drive from the edge of the box.
Argyle took the game to the visitors in the second half and made several chances but the nearest they came to scoring was when Brad Ausden crashed a shot against the Teigns' crossbar.
The visitors took advantage of Argyle pressing forward, when John Vile was left completely unmarked on the right and his cross was fired home by Mark Forrester.
Argyle tried to save the game but to no avail and in the end a deserved victory went to the visiting side who had a slight edge in tactics throughout the game. The home side played with plenty of youthful flare and exuberance but lacked the experience and clever covering of Teignmouth player-manager Geoff Breslan, the former Exeter City player.
Charlie Bond, a spokesman for the club, said: 'Okehampton have had their best ever season since joining the Peninsula League and much credit is due to the managers and the very young side they have built. 'The supporters hope that this promising squad can be kept together next year and that with a year of experience of playing at this level behind them, the team can achieve even greater things in the coming season. They have certainly been a credit to the town this season and have given all the top teams a run for their money.'
n This Saturday in the Devon and Exeter League Okehampton FC reserves are away to Kentisbeare, kick-off 3pm.
