OKEHAMPTON Simmons Bowling Club played host to a number of teams last weekend in a special tournament to mark its 90th anniversary.

Two teams from Hatherleigh and others from North Tawton, Holsworthy, Bradworthy and Crediton enjoyed a friendly competition that was won by the visitors from Bradworthy.

Okehampton SBC, for a relatively small club, is more than holding its own in the leagues that it plays. It competes in the Exeter and district league and county trophy, with three over 60s teams and another one in the local shield.

Club captain Roger Pedrick told the Times: 'This is a very social club. We had 14 new members join this season and they all have said what a wonderful and friendly club it is.'

This year the club is raising money for the children's hospice at Little Bridge House in Barnstaple, and, in memory of past members, also to the local hospice.
