SUE Walker from Northlew competed in the World Duathlon Championships which took place in Ottawa, Canada, on a hot and windy day which made conditions testing, especially as Sue's race started at 1.10pm in the afternoon.
Sue, a member of Okehampton Running Club, completed the sprint distance race as a member of Team GB, starting with a run of just more than five kilometre followed by a 20km bike leg and then another run of 2.5km.
The race took place on closed roads just outside the city centre, the course being mainly flat but with a long incline on the second part of both the run and the bike legs.
After leading out the first run (20 minutes 31 seconds) and having the second fastest bike time (34.51) and fastest second run (10.22).
Sue won the silver medal in her age group having been beaten to gold by a competitor from the USA by just under ten seconds. She was thrilled to win the silver and to be the sixth fastest woman overall.
Sue said: 'I would especially like to thank the Okehampton Running Club for all their support and in particular the fast runners in Coe group for making me give chase in the speed training sessions!
As a medal winner Sue automatically qualifies to represent Great Britain again at the World Championships next year, which take place in Pontevedra, Northern Spain at the beginning of June 2014.
