NORTH Tawton hosted Tavistock RFC in a pre season friendly at Taw Meadows last Friday.
With a good pre season and good numbers to training, North Tawton had a strong squad available. With the hosts having the facilities to play under floodlights the game kicked off at 7.30pm and due to pre season the game was split into three 25 minutes halves.
The opening 10 minutes was even with both sides struggling to break down the defence. However it was the home side who were the first to get on the score sheet. A well worked move by the back line saw the skipper Craig Dennis run away with the ball and score under the posts. The successful conversion made it 7-0
After the restart Tavistock came back strongly and threatened but could not get any momentum into the game while the North Tawton forwards coped well and provided a strong platform for the backs to work and this proved the difference between the two sides.
A second try coming from a well worked move saw Matt Baker chase a kick over the top, with his pace taking him around the full back and under the sticks. The try was converted to make it 14-0.
The second quarter saw more of the same with James Bowden scoring from the wing to make it 21:0. With tired legs on both sides, penalties were starting to be conceded. A final break from Luke Dennis sealed an excellent victory for North Tawton and a final score of 26-0.
Both sides have a lot to ponder after this performance. With one league between the two sides it was hard to tell the teams apart and North Tawton and Tavistock have a lot of work to do before the league season starts in early September!
