Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one East

Okehampton Argyle 1

Crediton Utd 0

IN a game in which defences dominated, Argyle did really well to take all three points after Crediton had taken the early initiative.

The visitors made the better chances in the first half and had far more shots on goal but Okehampton keeper Harry Geering was a match for everything thrown at him and made some brilliant saves.

Great credit is due also to the Argyle back four of Wills, Williams, McGratton and Hollands who gamely repelled a series of attacks and never gave the visiting forwards any room. Meanwhile the midfield of Chadwick, Squire, Wren and Crimmins battled hard for every ball and attempted to create counter attacks, but the big Crediton back four had little trouble in handling Argyle's lightweight forwards. All credit is due to Coakley and Kinsey for their tremendous running and probing but the home side had virtually no penetration in the first half.

Playing down the slope after the break, Argyle began to create openings and put the visitors' defence under pressure. Twenty minutes from time, Argyle brought on substitute Ed Bradshaw for Kinsey and his size began to upset the visitors' defence.

With ten minutes left, Ollie Crimmins went on a great run down the left that took him past two defenders to the bye line, where he fired in a pin-point cross on to the head of Bradshaw. His powerful header beat visiting keeper Lee Waring but came back off the upright, only for Bradshaw to show great reflexes to force home the rebound.

Argyle's tails were up now and they almost increased their lead in the last two minutes as first Coakley saw a shot cleared off the line and rebound to Bradshaw only for his shot from a narrow angle to also be cleared off the line.

Ed Squire fired in the rebound this time but Waring did well to push it round the post.

Okehampton put in a tremendously hardworking performance to win this game but man of the match must go to Harry Geering, whose tremendous saves kept them in the game in the first half.

The winner in Argyle 200 club draw for March 9 is ticket number 23, John Wright, £25.
