Okehampton LADIES’ THIRDS 2

DART LADIES’ THIRDS 0

THIS was another great result for the Okehampton Columbines third team who dominated this game against their opponents.

It looked like it was going to be evenly matched at the outset with Jennie Humphry, making a rare appearance in goal for Oke, having to keep alert to the Dart attack. Playing some good hockey, Oke began to surge forward and the Dart goalkeeper had some smart saves to make from the home forwards and particularly Amanda Sim.

The deadlock was eventually broken when, after a series of shots blocked by the visiting goalkeeper, Izzy Rowlands made no mistake when her strong push from the top of the circle arrowed into the back of the goal.

After that it was one-way traffic. Dart defended in numbers which allowed Okehampton’s centre back, Nic Bennie, to press forward and even sweeper, Sandy Houston, was able to make some good forays up the pitch. Backs, Hannah Woodhams and Lois Rowlands, covered anything coming down the flanks and each were effective in playing the ball out of trouble to their respective wingers.

Sarah Marvin controlled the centre of the pitch picking up and distributing the ball before Dart could create any form of attack and player of the match, Annie Strawbridge, had another superb game at right wing as Dart simply could not cope with her speed and determination.

Sarah Bazeley played high up the pitch keeping the opposition defence occupied deep in their own half but despite the constant pressure it took the Columbines a while to get the all important second goal to kill off the match. This eventually came from a short corner out to Amanda Sim who slipped the ball right for Viv Weatherington to place past the goalkeeper.

The relief was palpable and the home side created many more chances but the final score remained at 2-0.
