Every team has a day when everything seems to go wrong and this was Okehampton’s.
On the day, Axminster were the better team, passing the ball quickly and accurately and shutting down Argyle’s midfield strongly and efficiently.
It was a pity to see some of the Okey players blaming each other when mistakes were made rather than supporting each other.
Both sides started off strongly and the game swung from end to end but Axminster looked the more dangerous going forward. A good interchange on 29 minutes between Luke Alden and Brad Ausden saw the latter put the ball in the net for Okehampton but this was ruled out for offside.
Axminster’s wide man on the right had tremendous speed and skill and posed problems for the Argyle defence throughout the first half and on 42 minutes, he rounded two defenders and fired an unstoppable shot past Aaron Dearing: 1-0 to the visitors.
Okehampton put in a good effort in the second half to try to find an equaliser but too often were forced into a hopeful long ball because of the pressure put on their defenders and midfield by Axminster who shut every move down very quickly.
Then 39 minutes into the second half, the visitors sealed the game when pressure on the right saw their forward produce a lovely turn and shot from a narrow angle inside the box.
Okey didn’t give up even after having Scott Sanders sent off for handball, his second bookable offence, and with Josh Coles on from the substitutes bench began to look more dangerous.
Alden had a tremendous shot pushed away by the keeper and Axminster did well to clear the loose ball and there were a couple of penalty appeals waived off by the referee but as the 10 minutes of time added on ticked away, there was to be no reward for Okehampton on the day.
This leaves Argyle at the top of the league but Brixham and Torpoint have better records and games in hand. In fact, Torpoint must be favourites to win the League this season after beating Brixham on Saturday, so next week’s game at Torpoint is a vital one for Okehampton.
Next Saturday, Okehampton are away to Torpoint Athletic in the South West Peninsula League Premier East Division, kick-off 3pm
The Reserves and Thirds both had their games postponed on Saturday and next week the Reserves are away to University of Exeter Reserves and the Thirds away to Witheridge Reserves, both games kicking off at 2.15pm.
