AN Okehampton couple are offering the opportunity for someone to be mortgage free, by putting their home up for raffle.

Paul and Margaret Griffiths, who moved from London just over seven years ago, plan to give somebody the chance to get on the property ladder, by entering their bungalow in an online competition.

The property is currently valued at £325,000.

Anyone can enter the competition, which costs £3 per day, with a choice to enter from one to five days.

The couple hope to make enough money to pay off the remainder of their mortgage, which will then allow them to give their home away.

Any extra funds left over from the competition entry fees would be donated to a charity of their choice.

Mr Griffiths said he hoped to generate plenty of interest by staging the competition.

He said: 'There is the chance that we might not make the funds and in the worse case scenario, the property would be put back on the market.

'We are not taking any money until after the registration closes, so it is important that people realise if sufficient funds haven't been met, they do not lose out.'

Mr Griffiths said he would like to help make a difference to someone's life.

He said: 'All though this may only be a small step in the great scheme of things, it could be quite a life-changing opportunity for the winner, and have a knock-on effect to their lives.

'The winner could live in the property, in which case they may have a property elsewhere that they may want to sell or rent out.

'That would give another family the chance to have somewhere to live, or they may wish to rent as a shared property, which would help others to get on their feet.'

Mr Griffiths said it was about giving somebody a chance.

He said: 'Why can't someone with less money have a property like ours?

'We didn't have loads of money when we moved, but we slowly did the bungalow up and we want to give somebody the chance to have what we think is an amazing place.'

Mr Griffiths said due to work commitments they plan to relocate to the Andover area by the end of February next year.

He added: 'This offer has no strings attached.

'It is not in any way part of any company promotion, nor is this a get-rich-quick scam.

'This is only our way of getting around the credit crunch — the banks will not give a mortgage to people who may wish to own a property of this price tag — so we are just giving ordinary, hard working people the chance to win a property of their dreams.'

The competition is open now and the deadline for entries is New Year's Eve.
