WINE lovers of Okehampton were challenged on their knowledge of a variety of quality wines, when the Friends of All Saints Parish Church presented a wine and cheese evening, with a difference.
A wide range of wines by Majestic Wines of Exeter, ranging from sparkling, whites and fuller reds, were enjoyed by guests who sat around candlelit tables in teams.
They were each given a good tasting of one wine at a time, blind, followed by three explanations as to what the wine was and what region it was from.
They then had to work out who was telling the truth.
A choice of red and white wines were on sale during the evening, and soft drinks were also available.
There was also a range of cheeses supplied by Taw Valley Creamery in North Tawton, which donated the Cheddar cheese. The remainder of the cheeses were contributed by a supporter of the Friends of All Saints Church, all accompanied by French bread and biscuits.
The winning team won a large bottle of Rioja Reserva wine and the team with the fewest correct answers won a dozen Doom Bar beers.
Majestic Wines also offered to donate a percentage of the sales to the friends' funds, which are raised on social events in aid of maintaining and preserving the fabric of the church.
The event raised a total of £320.
