IT'S that time of year again when live entertainment fills the streets of a West Devon village — Winkleigh Fair Week has arrived.

The week kicks off pre-fair with a church fete, followed by a quiz in the evening to mark the beginning of the fair on Saturday, July 10.

The fair officially starts on Sunday, July 11 with the well dressing by Winkleigh Pre-School, followed by the opening ceremony and the crowning of the Fair King and Queen.

Torrington Silver Band will perform and a balloon race takes place in the village square.

A masked workshop for children will be held in the square between 2pm and 2.45pm.

Visitors can also enjoy a church service, followed by cream teas served by Winkleigh WI in the community centre.

Outdoor entertainment will see an inter-pub cricket match with a bouncy castle to keep the children entertained, along with hot snacks provided by the Lions of Hatherleigh.

On Monday, July 12, guests can enjoy the last of the West Devon Methodist's tour of the Roger Jones musical, Rock, about the life of St Peter. The show will be performed in the village hall.

On Tuesday, July 13 a popular dog show will be held at the sports centre from 6.30pm, where the Lions will again provide hot snacks.

Everyone is welcome to join in Winkleigh's Got Talent which is on Wednesday, July 14 in the village hall.

Thursday, July 15 will be host to the village produce show, which will take place in the afternoon and early evening in the village hall, followed by race night at 8pm.

On Friday, July 16, from 6pm until 9pm, a children's disco organised by the Friends of Winkleigh Primary, will be held at the school.

All children are welcome and entry costs £1. Entry for those who attend the primary is free and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Winkleigh Football Group will be organising an early evening walk, leaving at 6.30pm and the final of the skittles competition, which will be held all week, will take place in the evening.

The week culminates on Saturday, July 17 as Fair Saturday gets underway. The farmers' market and rural skills event will be held in South Street, as well as a vintage car rally with locally owned vintage vehicles from 10am.

Also running through the morning will be a mask workshop and Big Beat — innovative and original purveyors of percussion music running junk music workshops.

Afternoon events start with an animals themed children's fancy dress parade and competition.

A children's DJ will also be in the square all day, performing a walkabout show and balloon making.

Running throughout the afternoon will be a Battle of the Bands competition, a fair ground, bouncy castle and a bucking bronco for the younger children.

The musical, Saw Extraordinare, will be performed in the afternoon along with ReptoBug, who will give a talk on a range of insects and reptiles, that will be on show.

The village races, village game and grand draw, take place towards the end of the afternoon, where hot snacks will be provided, again by the Lions.

Also serving refreshments will be the WI in the community centre and the Old Tea Shop and the Oasis Coffee Shop, will be open for drinks and ploughman's lunches. There will be live music from 6.30pm with Thorvetones from Thorveton, who will play out the fair.
