A GROUP of Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members from across Devon recently embarked on the trip of a lifetime to Iceland.

While some of the members took part in the National Icelandic Jamboree, others completed the Explorer Belt Expedition around the country.

Pictured right is Sophie Hunt from Okehampton receiving a cheque for £100 toward the expenses for the trip from Okehampton Rotary Club president Allenton Fisher.

All the other scouts pictured are from Okehampton, South Zeal and North Tawton, plus scout leader Paul Charlton.

Twenty-one Explorer Scouts and four leaders attended the Jamboree in Hamrar Akureyri in the North of Iceland. The theme of the Jamboree was on a Viking Trail, and there was a range of activities focusing on the country's Viking connections and history.

Sophie said: 'The whole Jamboree was an experience I could never forget.

'We all had an opportunity to represent Devon so we chose to have a beach theme. A lot of people came to surf and play volleyball.

'After the Jamboree, we travelled around Iceland for three days and the views were amazing.'

Meanwhile, eleven Explorer Scouts and Scout Network members from across Mid Devon, North Devon and Exeter Districts did the Explorer Belt, with four leaders as the support team.

The Explorer Belt, a Scouting award for members aged 16 to 25, is a ten-day expedition to a foreign country.

While completing 100 miles on foot, they completed one major project, choosing Icelandic architecture; Geothermal energy use in Iceland and the Icelandic tourist industry as their subjects.

They also did ten minor projects, including voluntary community work, sampling various Icelandic foods, visiting a farm and sleeping somewhere strange or unusual for one night.

They had to keep a diary and must now produce a report to present to a panel of assessors to get the award.
