A WATERLOGGED pitch forced the cancellation of Okehampton Colts' rugby match away to Paignton on Saturday — but the players didn't take it easy!
The Colts put spare energy to good use when a contingent of the squad and coaches embarked on a sponsored row using rowing machines from the club's superbly equipped gym.
Club stewardess Pauline Penna provided sufficient bacon rolls to keep the lads going to row a total of 90,000 metres – that's 90 kilometres – or in English 56 miles!
The event was held to raise money for a much needed new set of team shirts and if the lads raise sufficient funds then other kit – training tops, kit bags etc can be added.
Stewart Benney and Jamie Stevens each completed 15,000 metres and Scotty Simpson flabbergasted all present with a barnstorming effort of 4,000 metres in one row and completed 10,000 metres in total, as did Cameron Rickerby.
Coaches Phil Friend and Ross Medlyn chipped in with 5,000 metres between them but curtailed further endeavour for fear of requiring the services of the Devon Air Ambulance!
