AFTER the success of Pirates of Penzance staged by the Tavistock Musical Theatre Company (TMTC) at The Wharf last October which broke box office records, the group is back to launch its new production — Me and My Girl.

TMTC will be performing the show this autumn and will begin preparations with a recruitment campaign at Kingdon House in Tavistock on Wednesday, March 9.

Newcomers are being sought to star in the show and the musical director will be running through one of the big show-stoppers The Lambeth Walk both in song and dance.

This fabulous family musical by Noel Gay is set in the late 1930s and tells the story of an unapologetically unrefined cockney gentleman named Bill Snibson, who learns that he is the 14th heir to the Earl of Hereford.

As well as The Lambeth Walk, the show features the songs The Sun has got his Hat on and Leaning on a Lamp-post.

Director for the show will be Julian Bennett and the producer will be Pete Clement, the same winning formula that led Pirates of Penzance, which has been nominated for the best Gilbert and Sullivan production in the South West at the NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) awards. TMTC will find out this weekend whether it has been successful.

Pete Clement said: ‘Me and My Girl is a wonderful show — a real cockney extravaganza — and we welcome all newcomers to join this happy company which is really on the up.’

The launch evening will take place at 7.30pm.
