OKEHAMPTON Squash Club's first team travelled to Sidmouth for their third game of the season — a side who had also won both their opening two games.
The team were aiming to continue their promising start to the campaign. They came away with a narrow 3-2 victory to make it three wins out of three.
Dave Harding playing at string five battled hard but was out played by his opponent to lose 3-0. Ed Bewes, playing at four, took part in a closely fought battle but eventually lost 3-1. Phil Kemsley playing at three won his match 3-0, developing his accuracy after doing just enough to take the first game 15-13 before going on to win his next two games comfortably. Arnie Searle at two won his match 3-0. The match saw some incredible, gruelling rallies, with a high standard being displayed by both players. Arnie, showing a return to form, executed some excellent touch shots and hit great width and depth to out-class his opponent.
With the match poised at 2-2, Clive Marais played the deciding rubber. In a bitterly fought, highly competitive contest Clive took the match 3-1. After a tight first game, Clive let his concentration slip allowing his opponent back into the match and square things at 1-1. Clive re-focussed and took the next two games after some accurate hitting and deft touches forced the opposition into errors, and giving away cheap points.
The 3-2 result equates to a 15-7 point victory for Okehampton.
The second team did not have a game last week. The firsts next game is at home on Monday at 7.30pm.
