PUPILS from Bridestowe, Exbourne, Hatherleigh, Lydford, Northlew, Okehampton College, Okehampton Primary and South Tawton took part in the Okehampton Learning Community annual concert recently. Debbie Kent from Babcock's Music Service led the children for a singing workshop in the afternoon and the children warmed up with lots of clapping and action songs as well as experiencing singing in different types of rounds before rehearsing the joint songs. Parents were then treated to an evening concert with all 150 pupils singing 'Happy', 'Roll Jordan Roll' and 'All Together Now'. They were accompanied by Paul Painter, Olly Davey and Ben Van Weede as well as students from Okehampton College who composed their own backing tracks to the songs and also provided harmonies. Pupils represented their schools with varied performances, including choirs, recorder groups, tenor horns and even a rock band. Heather Parks from Community Lynx said: 'It was an amazing concert and the children did incredibly well. We are very grateful for the hard work of the all the music teachers, the facilitators from Babcock, and to staff from Okehampton College for their technical support.' Val Berry, director of music at Okehampton College, took the opportunity to tell parents about a new music project due to be launched in the autumn term with funding from Okehampton United Charity and the Okehampton Learning Community. A music centre will open after school at Okehampton College for children in Year 3 upwards to attend instrumental lessons, singing, ensemble playing as well as other musical activities. Further information about scholarships for the music centre will follow but anyone wishing to register their interest or wanting to get involved with the project can contact Heather Parks at [email protected]">[email protected] Caroline Boother, head teacher at Hatherleigh Primary School and chair of the Okehampton Learning Community, thanked Community Lynx for organising the event.
