Okehampton Town Council has announced the colours of this year’s hanging baskets which will hang outside the town centre’s shops over the summer.
The council will place red, white and blue-themed hanging baskets on the town hall in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year.
There will also be hanging baskets in the town colours (yellow and blue). The colours were also chosen to show the town’s support for Ukraine.
The council hopes to have the baskets ready for the jubilee bank holiday celebrations in the summer which will take place from June 2-5.
This year will also see the town council’s second annual hanging basket competition for homes and businesses on Fore Street, Market Street, West Street, George Street, St James Street, East Street, the Victorian Arcade and the Red Lion Yard.
Though there is normally no theme, the council has asked entrants this year to decorate their hanging baskets with platinum jubilee colours - red, white, blue, and purple.
Entrance to the competition is free and all plants must be real as plastic or silk flowers will not qualify for a prize.
The closing date for entries is May 31 and judging will take place in early July. Entries will be judged on colour, form, variety and health of the plants.Winners will receive a small cash prize.
Anyone interested in entering can download the entry forms from the council website at www.okehampton.gov.uk.
The hanging basket competition was launched in 2020.
