A SUCCESSFUL event designed to highlight the hidden plight faced by many carers was recently held in Okehampton. Earlier this month, as part of the 14th annual carers' week, a special carers' information stand was in place at Waitrose car park in Okehampton. The stand was organised and run by carers support worker Jane Ashby with the hope of providing carers in around Okehampton with information of the support services that are available to them. Said Jane: 'We aim to provide an opportunity for local carers to come together and share experiences and advice — especially if they have ever experienced health problems as a result of their caring responsibilities. 'Most importantly, we want carers in Okehampton to be aware of the support and services that are available to them. 'Carers' week is a national event and campaign to raise awareness and help identify hidden carers. 'Lots and lots of people came up and said they didn't know about the different support services that exist.' A carer is defined as someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or diability. Further information about support and services that carers can access is available from http://www.carersindevon.org.uk">www.carersindevon.org.uk, from UNITE Carers Mid-Devon on 01884 257511 or from the Carers' Support Line on 0800 783 0763.
