THE hard work and generosity of people in Chagford, who helped raise £7,000 for Cancer Research UK, was marked in the town square on Saturday (October 6).

The money was raised by the town’s Cancer Research UK committee which organises the Big Breakfast and Street Market each year, generously supported by the community.

Marion Symes, chair of the committee, presented the cheque for £7,000 to Ros Fry, Cancer Research UK’s South West regional legacy manager.

‘This is a tremendous effort by so many people in Chagford and the surrounding villages who support our two main fundraising events each year, the Street Market and Big Breakfast,’ said Marion. ‘The committee has been in existence for over 50 years and raised over £160,000 for Cancer Research UK. We are grateful for the continued support of our community in helping to fund research into causes, diagnoses and treatment of cancer.’

Cathy Talbot, Cancer Research UK’s central fundraising executive for Devon, said: ‘The Chagford committee is an absolute inspiration and we can’t thank all the members enough for their commitment to helping Cancer Research UK beat cancer sooner. This is such a fantastic record-breaking amount for this community to have raised over the past year!’
