COUNCIL leaders from across Devon will pass through Okehampton as part of a tough cycle challenge this weekend.

Councillors from a number of different authorities will cycle the 102-mile coast-to-coast cycle challenge from Ilfracombe to Plymouth to raise funds for a recumbent hand-cycle suitable for people with mobility disabilities. The cycle will be made free to hire for use along the coast-to-coast trail.

The route largely traces the course of former railway lines, taking cyclists along the western flank of Dartmoor.

Devon County Council's cabinet members Cllrs Andrea Davis and Cllr Will Mumford will join North Devon Council's Leader Cllr Brian Greenslade and Cllr Geoff Fowler, Tavistock Town Cllr Brian Trew and mayor Cllr Philip Sanders along with officers from Devon County Council and North Devon Council.

The team themselves are organising the sponsorship, aiming to reach the £1,700 necessary for the cycle.

The Ilfracombe to Okehampton section of the ride will take place on Saturday September 3, with the remainder, from Okehampton to Plymouth, being completed on Sunday September 4.

Cllr Brian Greenslade said: 'The council's chief executive Mike Mansell and I are going to be getting on our bikes in support of this worthy cause.

'It means, by raising money for this special bike, even more people will be able to access the coast-to-coast cycle path.

'This in turn means even more people will be able to enjoy the stunning scenery we have here in North Devon, whilst keeping fit at the same time.'
