THE pupils at Hatherleigh Primary had a busy week recently learning about all things French during its annual French Day and all about World War One on a war themed day.

On the French Day, children took part in activities in their classes, including designing a French inspired tie, creating collages of Monet’s Waterlily Pond, building the Eiffel Tower using marshmallows and spaghetti, learning about the Tour de France and enjoying hot chocolate and croissants.

The whole school went to the community centre in the afternoon for a French assembly, where each class performed songs they had been learning as part of their French lessons.

The day was organised by Madame Wilkinson who teaches French on a weekly basis across Key Stage 1 and 2.

The school also held a World War One day where lots of children dressed up to celebrate the day then men returned to Hatherleigh from the war 100 years ago.

Chestnuts and Hawthorns classes walked up to the church to sketch the war memorial and then sang songs from the WWI era in the square. Other classes spent the morning learning about what it was like to be a soldier in the war and living in the trenches as well as having a go at cracking codes and using Morse code to send messages.
