Students at Shebbear College are celebrating some outstanding A-level and BTEC results.
Most of the class of 2019 have secured places at their first choice universities. A number of departments including English literature, psychology and philosophy and ethics achieved record results, but the top performer was art, for whom five of the eight students achieved A*s.
Students will now be studying a diverse range of courses across the country. Head girl Antonia Aliberti has decided to study economics at the prestigious University of Bocconi in Milan whilst her twin brother Alessandro will study philosophy at Cardiff.
Merryn is going to Loughborough to study maths, Alex will undertake a gap year in Canada before studying business at Lancaster and Holly is going to Leeds to learn about fashion marketing. Other university destinations for leavers include Exeter, Newcastle, Reading and Bristol.
A number of students who joined Shebbear for sixth form from other local schools enjoyed fantastic results. Eloise, who came from Great Torrington School is going to the University of Edinburgh to study English literature. She obtained an A* in English as did Maddie, from Okehampton College, who also achieved an A* in art and an A in psychology and will be studying English at the University of Nottingham.
Headmaster Simon Weale said: ‘Shebbear has an excellent sixth form which gives individual attention to every student so that they can fulfil their potential. I am so pleased that these students were able to settle in so well and achieve so much.
‘We are immensely proud of all of our upper sixth leavers. They leave us as confident, hard-working young people who are mindful of others. I am sure they will be successful in whatever they go on to do.’
A number of students were the first Old Shebbearians to obtain BTECs. These more vocational courses have helped to broaden the appeal of the curriculum.
This autumn the school will also be offering A-level computing for the first time.
