MORE than eight fire crews were mobilised to fight a fire involving several buildings in West Chapple, Winkleigh last Thursday.

Two dutch barns and a thatched roundhouse were on fire.

Fire engines from North Tawton, Chulmleigh, Torrington, Okehampton, Witheridge, South Molton and Bideford along with an aerial ladder from Exeter, water carrier from Barnstaple and incident support unit from Ilfracombe attended the incident, plus the environmental unit from Crediton.

Upon arrival crews confirmed the fire involved asbestos, gas cylinders and fertilisers.

They spent several hours battling the blaze, using two breathing apparatus sets, two hose reel jets, a safety jet and two compressed air foam jets to extinguish the fire. Crews revisited the scene at midnight to make further checks on the scene.
