TWO guide dog trainers from Okehampton are taking on the Five Peaks Challenge next week, to raise funds for the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Over five days Charlie Lane and Sarah White will trek and climb the five highest peaks in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland which will both be a physical feat and an organisational challenge.

The pair are training hard on Dartmoor to build up their stamina and improve their navigation skills.

Both Charlie and Sarah are volunteer boarders for the guide dog charity, looking after trainee guide dogs. They are currently caring for Yazmin, a sixteen month old labradoodle.

Sarah said: 'Since we have volunteered for Guide Dogs we have come to realise that the guide dog service makes it possible for many people who are blind and partially sighted to retain their independence.

'Guide Dogs is entirely dependent on the generosity of its supporters to fund the cost of breeding, training and lifetime support of each dog which amounts to £50,000.

'We are looking for sponsors for our challenge and hope to raise at least £750 for Guide Dogs.'

As Guide Dogs receives no financial support from national government it is thanks to the help of supporters like Charlie and Sarah that Guide Dogs is able to continue providing life changing guide dogs for people.
