I WAS one of those lucky enough to see one of Sir Alan Cobham's 'Flying Circus' displays in the early 30s — I was also taken up for an exhilarating flight held tight by my uncle between his knees where we zoomed either upside down or looped the loop' at my uncle's excited demands. I remember the frightening manoeuvres vividly; Uncle whooping, myself speechless with terror — and all for five shillings.
I still remember uncle thought that was very dear! I also remember one of those famous Schneider Trophy races around the Isle of White where some of the first single-winged planes tore past (some nose- dived into the water but I didn't see that) and the first Spitfire and Messerchmidt prototypes caused much comment.
