OKEHAMPTON came from 12-6 down at half time to beat Ivybridge 33-12 in the Devon derby.

A final try and conversion five minutes from time probably gave Okehampton a wider winning margin than they deserved, but no one could claim the wrong side lost.

Dan Fogerty kept Okey in the frame with four penalties and converted tries by Joe Mawle, Tom White and Brandon Horn to win it.

Okehampton were never ahead from minute six in the first half until 11 minutes after half-time when they hit the front.

A combination of power play from the Okey forwards, plus discipline problems that saw the Bridge go down to 14 men on two occasions meant the result was never in any doubt.

After going behind to a penalty on three minutes, Ivybridge hit the front with a try by Alex Sheridan that went unconverted.

Marcus Prout made it 10-3 to the Bridge on 11 minutes and this time Matt Grieveson landed the extra points.

Okehampton crept back to 12-6, 12-9 and 12-12 in Fogerty penalties before taking the lead with Mawle’s push-over try.

White burrowed over for the second home try and Brandon Horn on the wing added a third straight from the restart. Fogerty did not miss a kick in the second half.

Winning captain Fogerty knew exactly where to lay the credit for Okehampton’s win.

’With conditions as they were getting on the front foot was massive and out forwards all stepped up and had a stormer,’ said Fogerty.

’Our defence stood up well and we nullified anything they threw at us.’

The home team included former Ivybridge centre Matt Titchias, who is a player-coach at Okehampton and was persuaded to play to help cover an injury issue in the backline.

Okehampton, who have moved up to third from bottom in the South West Premier table, are away to Weston this Saturday.
