HATHERLEIGH Rotary Club has now funded 12 Shelterboxes in the past seven years, thanks to the generous support given to their collections and fund-raising initiatives.
Three of the boxes went to Tsunami disaster areas. Other areas of the world that have received Hatherleigh boxes are Dhaka, Islamabad, Katmandu, Nairobi and Sudan. Other organisations in the area that have also funded Shelterboxes are Hatherleigh Community Centre, Hatherleigh Parochial Church Council and Black Torrington Primary School.
The Rotary Club will continue to raise money for the organisation, which has provided shelter and essential supplies for more than 500,000 people in 46 countries around the world. The aid is handled directly, from start to finish, by Rotary members in all of the affected countries.
Donations can be made at any time by dropping in a cheque or cash to Tidball Insurance Services at The Royal Oak in Hatherleigh or to Philip Pyle Auctioneers.
The club also has a scrap metal initiative running and organiser Andy Tucker from Rosehill Garage, Shebbear this week thanked the many generous people who donated their old cars and vans, copper and aluminium. So far this year he has sold more than £2,000 worth in his second year of running the project.
The scrap metal is transported and sold free of charge, enabling all income to go to the charities supported by the club, including Children's Hospice and Devon Air Ambulance.
There is also an outlet for other metal objects and collection may be possible. To check suitability call Andy on 01409 281257 or 01409 281043.
