THE annual assembly meeting of Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council gave councillors the chance to reflect on the past 12 months and support upcoming events in the town.

Chris Hodgson, one of the organisers of Okehampton Battle of the Bands, gave a presentation to councillors and members of the public about the event's past successes and what is planned for the 2012 event. The council pledged its support, donating £200 to help fund this year's event.

Council chairman Derek Webber outlined the activities of the council over the past year and explained how it is involved in planning applications for the developments to the east of Okehampton.

The current use of Meldon Quarry was also demonstrated in a presentation by Matt Kay and Doug Kemp from RIG Systems Ltd.

RIG Systems are providers of rescue training, and have recently started using the quarry to run their courses. As well as providing an alternative use for the quarry, which was mothballed last year, their activities could help generate income to the local economy.
