Carlsberg South West Peninsula division one East
Okehampton Argyle 2
Newton Abbot Spurs 1
THIS was a well earned win for Argyle against a good Newton Abbot side who showed tremendous fighting spirit.
The first ten minutes was a scrappy affair as both sides tried to find their touch and establish the ascendancy, but it was Argyle who took the initiative and for the first 60 minutes, they looked like they could be the only winners of a tight game. But Spurs fought back in the last half hour to have Okehampton hanging on by the skin of their teeth.
Argyle took the lead in the 24th minute when Ben Williams played a lovely pass to Luke Alden on the left of the visitor's box. The midfielder cleverly cut in before playing a square ball with the outside of his right foot across the Newton Abbot goalmouth. Up stepped Argyle centre forward Will Hawking to volley the ball home from close in for a superb goal.
Four minutes before half-time, Argyle doubled their lead when they won a corner on the right and Chris Wills' perfectly flighted kick found Matt Mortimer who rose above the Newton Abbot defenders to score with a powerful header.
After the break, Newton Abbot came more into the game and with 30 minutes left began to push Argyle back. On 69 minutes, they got their just reward when James Clark headed home a right wing cross from Jake Elms.
Play swung from end to end but it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous. Okehampton can thank keeper Harry Geering who made two brilliant saves in the last ten minutes to ensure the three points stayed at Simmons Park.
This was another hard working performance by Okehampton. Everyone played their part in this win and Rob Clarke again impressed with his work rate although it was the tremendous team spirit shown by the whole squad that carried the Okes to victory..
