South West Peninsula division one East
Totnes and Dartington 2
Okehampton Argyle 0
WITH Argyle's outstanding players Adam Mortimer and Colin Marshall having moved to Southern League Tiverton, this was always going to be a difficult match against a team that had crushed the league leaders 7-1 the previous week.
However, Okehampton's squad fought hard all afternoon and made the home side work for their victory.
Totnes had the upper hand throughout and looked the more dangerous side, but if only Argyle had had a forward who could finish, the result could well have been different.
The home side exerted the early pressure but Argyle's defence stood firm and with the midfield tackling back and helping the defence out, any chances that did come Totnes' way were ably dealt with by Okehampton Argyle goalkeeper Saul Scarry.
Play continued evenly till half-time and Argyle went into the break holding Totnes comfortably to a 0 – 0 scoreline.
The second half was only five minutes old when the deadlock was broken.
A cross in from the left saw three Totnes forwards up against only one Argyle defender and Ben Bowhay powerfully headed home, although Scarry was unlucky as he still managed to get a hand to the ball. Shortly after this Argyle's left sided defender Shane Monnox who had had another excellent match had to leave the field with a recurring injury and Oke had to reshuffle their line up.
The midfield worked hard to keep Argyle in the game with Chris Hollands taking the eye, and substitute Paul Yip came on and injected enthusiasm and effort into a team that was beginning to look as if they didn't want the game enough.
Okehampton should have drawn level when Steve Williams was released with just the goalkeeper to beat but he blazed his shot wildly over the bar.
The game was sealed after 70 minutes when a mistake by defender Dan Johnston left Totnes' Ryan Hare free to square the ball to Mike Bishop and give the home side a 2 – 0 lead.
Totnes were unlucky not to increase their lead when a fine shot from outside the area rebounded from the Argyle post, but in the last five minutes Okehampton were equally unlucky when a great shot from the edge of the area by Stuart Entwhistle rattled the Totnes crossbar and came back into play.
