CHAGFORD Primary School pupils will host their own school farmers' market this month.

Attendees will be able to purchase fresh, tasty goods from a range of local food producers as well as items grown by pupils in the school garden.

As part of their ongoing Food for Life Partnership work, pupils will take responsibility for organising the markets from start to finish.

By running a stall themselves and working hand-in-hand with local farmers and producers, they will learn both enterprise skills as well understanding more about the local food chain.

The Food for Life Partnership has created a network of more than 4,400 schools across England committed to transforming their food culture.

It supports them to provide fresh, well-sourced and nutritious meals and improve their overall lunchtime experience.

It helps children, adults and teachers understand the importance of good nutrition and where their food comes from, through practical cooking and growing activities and farm visits.

Any money raised from the event will go towards further farm visits and food education in the school.

Catherine Rees-Stephan, headteacher at Chagford Primary said: 'Staff and pupils at the school are looking forward to taking the opportunity to support local businesses by organising our very own school farmers' market.'

Funding from Greater Dartmoor LEAF has enabled Chagford Primary and The Grove Primary in Totnes to hold farmers' markets.

Food for Life Partnership farm links officer Will Marcombe is supporting the schools thanks to the funding.

He said: 'These two schools have already learned a lot about farming, animal welfare, and food growing and cooking as part of their Food for Life Partnership Awards.

'Running these school farmers' markets cements this knowledge and our experience shows both local producers and schools benefit from the collaborative working.'

The Chagford Primary farmers' market takes place at the school tomorrow (Friday) from 3.30pm to 5pm.

All are welcome to attend.
