A COUPLE of years ago I fought an unsuccessful and single handed campaign to persuade Devon County Council to turn off many of the totally unnecessary and wasteful the street lights along the old A30.
These may have been essential when this was a trunk road but now that it is unclassified, they are pointless and an eyesore.
Now that energy prices are rising out of control and there is serious talk of the country being short of electricity, I feel that this question needs to be re-examined.
Around Bridestowe and Lewdown there are a mass of expensive lights whose only purpose is to illuminate the fields.
If Devon County Council has all this money to waste — and arguments about safety are rubbish —why are we still paying so much in council taxes?
