GIVEN the recent weather (‘Wet in West Devon,’ Tavistock Times, January 14) I am irresistibly reminded of a legend.  This, rather freely adapted, states that in ancient times the King of Tavistock gave his wise men a great task.

The wise men were asked to come up with a statement that the King could use at all times.  After years and years (and years) of labour they came up with the expression.  The King could say at all times, ‘Looks like rain.’
