IF you have a memory or photograph you would like to share concerning the days when Okehampton was a thriving livestock market town, then go to the Ockment Centre on Saturday, August 7.

The Okehampton Community Archives group is holding an informal coffee morning with local markets as its theme.

In Market Street, the site of the Somerfield's store was the old cattle ring and nearby there were livestock pens for sheep and pigs. The decline of the Okehampton market took place in the 1960/70s and disappeared when an abattoir was built at Hatherleigh.

The OCA invite people to bring along photographs or other items which they will display — or just tell them your memories of the time when Okehampton was the rural hub for the farming community. Copies will be made of any such items and returned to the owner.
